How to Measure Garage Door Spring Length
Follow these steps to accurately measure your garage door spring length.
Step 1: Safety Precautions
Before measuring, ensure the garage door is fully closed and the spring is not under tension. Never attempt to measure a loaded spring as this can be extremely dangerous.
Warning: If you're unsure about any step, contact a professional garage door technician.
Step 2: Spring Measurement
Measure the spring length from end to end, including the end cones. For the most accurate measurement:
- Use a flexible tape measure
- Measure from the outer edge of one end cone to the outer edge of the other
- Record the measurement to the nearest 1/4 inch
- Take multiple measurements to ensure accuracy
Step 3: Standard Spring Lengths
Door Height | Typical Spring Length | Notes |
---|---|---|
7 feet | 25" - 27" | Most common residential size |
8 feet | 28" - 30" | Standard oversized residential |
9 feet | 31" - 33" | Tall residential/light commercial |
10 feet | 34" - 36" | Commercial/industrial |
Step 4: Additional Measurements
For a complete spring replacement, you'll also need:
Inside Diameter (I.D.)
Measure the internal diameter of the spring. Common sizes are 1.75" and 2" I.D.
Wind Direction
Note whether the spring is left-wound or right-wound (looking from the end).
Step 5: Verify and Proceed
Double-check all measurements before ordering a replacement spring. Use our spring calculator to find the right spring based on your measurements.
